From Discourse to Action: Central Jakarta PMII Launches Green Movement for Ecological Justice

The Central Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Islamic Students Movement (PC PMII) has launched a Green Movement, an environmental care initiative realised through concrete tree-planting action.

The initiative marks a first step for PMII Central Jakarta in presenting an ecological movement that does not stop at discussion and criticism, but is realised through tangible action amid the growing threat of a climate crisis.

The Green Movement was launched through an activity titled “Ecotheology of the Movement: PMII Cadres Plant for Ecological Justice”.

The movement affirms that university students bear a moral responsibility to help preserve the environment whilst offering solutions to increasingly visible ecological problems.

The chairman of PC PMII Central Jakarta, Mu’ammar Rizal Fauzi, said the Green Movement was born of the awareness that student organisations must be able to act as pioneers of change, including on environmental issues.

“We want to start a new tradition at PMII Central Jakarta, where care for the environment is not sufficiently expressed through seminars or discussions,” said Amar after the launch of the Green Movement in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/7/2026).

He added that the Green Movement is proof that PMII cadres are present through concrete action. Planting trees means planting the future and demonstrating that the student movement can deliver direct benefits to society.

According to him, the environmental crisis is a matter of justice, because the most vulnerable groups in society are precisely those who feel the greatest impact of floods, pollution, drought and climate change.
