From Discourse to Action: Central Jakarta PMII Launches Green Movement for Ecological Justice

The Central Jakarta Branch of the Indonesian Islamic Student Movement (PC PMII) has initiated a Green Movement, an environmental awareness campaign realised through concrete tree-planting action. This initiative marks a first step for Central Jakarta PMII to present an ecological movement that does not stop at discussions and criticism, but is manifested through tangible deeds amidst the growing threat of the climate crisis. The launch of the Green Movement was carried out through an action titled ‘Ecotheology of the Movement: PMII Cadres Plant for Ecological Justice’. This movement affirms that students have a responsibility to help preserve the environment while providing solutions to increasingly evident ecological problems. Chairman of PC PMII Central Jakarta, Mu’ammar Rizal Fauzi, stated that the Green Movement was born from the awareness that student organisations must be pioneers of change, including on environmental issues. ‘We want to start a new tradition in Central Jakarta PMII, that environmental concern is not enough to be realised through seminars or discussions,’ Amar said after the launch. He added that the Green Movement is proof that PMII cadres are present through real action. Planting trees means planting the future and shows that the student movement can provide direct benefits to society. According to him, the environmental crisis is a matter of justice because the most vulnerable groups in society are the ones who most feel the impacts of floods, pollution, drought, and climate change.
