From Bulukumba, Ainun Proves Women Can Thrive with PNM Mekaar

For some residents of Ainun’s village in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, the prevailing belief was that women should not dream too far. After graduating from senior high school, the most natural path was considered to be marriage. This view accompanied Ainun throughout her adolescence. However, Ainun harboured a different dream. She wanted to work, be independent, and help her family. The opportunity arose in early 2023 when she saw a recruitment brochure for PNM Mekaar shared in her school alumni WhatsApp group. After completing the training, she became an Account Officer for PNM Mekaar, assisting women running ultra-micro businesses to grow and become self-reliant. Since officially joining PNM on 23 March 2023, Ainun has not only gained employment. PNM became a space that nurtured her growth, taught her to face challenges, and helped her realise the dreams she had been fighting for. Her days are spent assisting groups of PNM Mekaar clients, meeting women entrepreneurs, and witnessing first-hand how the spirit to rise always finds a way. Three years on, Ainun is now able to help cover the medical expenses for her father, who undergoes regular chemotherapy. For her, the greatest achievement is not the income she earns, but rather changing the mindset of her community. A senior high school diploma, once thought to only lead to the religious affairs office for marriage, has now become the starting point of a journey to work and bring benefits to many people. ‘From the clients, I learned that whether our fortune is little or plenty, we must remain grateful because everything is arranged according to its portion,’ said Ainun. Ainun is one of more than 43,000 PNM Account Officers who are present every day assisting millions of underprivileged women across Indonesia. Her story demonstrates that empowerment at PNM not only opens opportunities for clients to grow, but also provides a space for facilitators like Ainun to realise dreams that once nearly ended before they began.
