From Accusations to the Courtroom: Dr Tifa's Long Road in the Jokowi Diploma Case

The polemic surrounding the alleged fake diploma of Indonesia’s 7th President, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), which has been rolling on for years, has now entered a new phase. One of the most vocal figures to raise the issue, doctor and social media activist dr Tifauzia Tyassuma, known as dr Tifa, must now face legal proceedings in court. Dr Tifa’s journey in this case has been in the spotlight because she was among those actively expressing views regarding the alleged authenticity of Jokowi’s diploma from the start. Now, after a lengthy public controversy, her status has changed to that of a suspect, and the case has begun to be tried. The first hearing for dr Tifa is scheduled to take place at the East Jakarta District Court on Thursday, 2 July 2026. The case relates to the alleged criminal act of spreading electronic information deemed to contain defamation and slander. The case that has ensnared dr Tifa did not emerge overnight. The polemic began when several parties questioned the authenticity of President Jokowi’s diploma and spread various narratives casting doubt on his academic documents. The issue spread widely on social media and became a topic of public discussion. Various content, opinions, and analyses regarding the alleged fake diploma emerged, including those presented by a number of figures, academics, and social media activists. Amid the heated debate, Jokowi’s side repeatedly asserted that his diploma was an original document. Clarification was also provided by Jokowi’s alma mater, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), which stated that the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia was a legitimate graduate of the Faculty of Forestry. Despite this, the polemic continued to roll on until it entered the legal domain. A number of lawsuits were filed in court to test the authenticity of the President’s diploma. However, these various lawsuits did not change the legal status of the disputed document. As time went on, Jokowi chose to take legal action against several parties deemed to have spread baseless accusations. Police reports were subsequently filed over alleged defamation and the dissemination of electronic information considered harmful. Investigators then conducted a series of examinations of witnesses, experts, and the reported parties before finally naming several individuals as suspects.
