Friendly School Orientation Builds Confidence in Special Needs Students, Says Ministry

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) has stated that the implementation of the ‘Friendly School Orientation Period’ (MPLS Ramah) is not only a time for adaptation but also an initial step to build the self-confidence of students with special needs (ABK). Suryadi, Director of Special Education and Special Service Education (PKPLK) at Kemendikdasmen, said that the Friendly MPLS is more than just an activity to introduce the school environment; it is a space to instil respect for student dignity, build a positive school culture, strengthen character, and provide a joyful initial experience, including for students with special needs. He added that the series of Friendly MPLS activities also serves as a first step for students with special needs to understand the services and support available in their respective school environments. Therefore, the ministry hopes that all special needs schools (SLB) can design and implement a series of Friendly MPLS activities that are inclusive, safe, enjoyable, and accommodate the specific needs and characteristics of each student with special needs. He added that Kemendikdasmen has prepared a reference for activities that SLBs can conduct during the Friendly MPLS to accommodate the challenges faced by students with special needs. For SLBs, the ministry has prepared four reference books for MPLS activities tailored to different disabilities, namely visual impairment for SLB A, hearing impairment for SLB B, intellectual disability for SLB C, and physical disability for SLB D.
