Friderica Widyasari Dewi Becomes OJK Chair, Here is her Profile
The House of Representatives Commission XI approved Friderica Widyasari Dewi to fill the position of Chair of the Financial Services Authority (OJK). Previously, Friderica had been inaugurated as Acting Chair of OJK to replace Mahendra Siregar, who resigned at the end of January following a series of negative developments affecting Indonesia’s capital market, triggered by the freezing of Indonesian stocks in the MSCI index.
As OJK Chair, Friderica brings a lengthy track record, deep understanding, and cross-functional experience in the financial services sector, particularly capital markets.
For industry players, regulators, and retail investors, the name Friderica is not new. For more than two decades, she has navigated nearly the entire spectrum of Indonesia’s capital markets ecosystem: from exchange operators, infrastructure institutions, industry players, to regulators.
Friderica’s career was built progressively and consistently. She began her career at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) and was subsequently entrusted with various strategic positions, including as Director of Market Development. This role brought her into direct contact with market deepening issues, increasing the number of investors, and strengthening the quality of listed companies.
This experience continued when Friderica led PT Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI) as Chief Executive. Under her leadership, KSEI achieved several important milestones, particularly in the digitalisation of services and enhanced security of the securities custody system, a crucial foundation for market confidence.
Before joining OJK, Friderica also served as Chief Executive of BRI Danareksa Securities, enriching her perspective from the industry player’s side and direct interaction with investor dynamics.
Friderica obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Gadjah Mada University (UGM), pursued an MBA at California State University, United States, and completed a doctoral programme at UGM.
Her doctoral dissertation specifically examined ownership structure, firm value, and risk at listed companies in Indonesia’s capital market.
During her time at OJK, Friderica is known as one of the key drivers of strengthening market conduct oversight. She views market integrity as determined not only by adequate capital and administrative compliance, but also by the behaviour of financial services practitioners towards consumers and investors.
This commitment led Friderica to be entrusted as part of the OECD International Network on Financial Education (OECD/INFE) and the Governing Council of FinCoNet, strengthening Indonesia’s position in global discussions on financial consumer protection.
Various national awards received by Friderica in recent years affirm her reputation as a consistent and influential leader in the financial services sector. However, future challenges are considered substantial.
Various observers believe that Friderica’s leadership at OJK will be tested by increasingly complex capital market dynamics: global economic volatility, digitalisation and innovation in financial products, and increased retail investor participation and the complexity of consumer protection efforts.
Friderica Widyasari Dewi’s appointment as OJK chair marks a new chapter in the governance of Indonesia’s financial services sector. Not only because she is the first woman in the position, but because she brings a rare combination: field experience, academic rigour, and adaptive oversight vision.
Amid increasingly rapid and complex market demands, Friderica arrives as a policy architect who understands that trust is the primary currency of the financial services sector. Indonesia’s financial sector now places great hopes on leadership born from a long process, not merely momentum.
