Friday Prayers and Good Friday Coincide, Istiqlal-Cathedral Atmosphere Calm and Conducive
The performance of Friday prayers at Istiqlal Mosque coincided with the celebration of Good Friday at Jakarta Cathedral Church. The atmosphere of worship at both Istiqlal and the Cathedral proceeded in a conducive manner.
Residents assessed that the two moments of worship for Muslims and Christians ran side by side without any friction. Both Christian and Muslim communities mutually respected each other’s worship.
A resident from Bogor, Bambang (55), said there were no issues when the two worships occurred simultaneously. According to him, the attitude of mutual respect has become commonplace in society, especially in Jakarta.
“From what I saw on the journey, it’s all calm. We’re just carrying out our worship,” said Bambang when met at Istiqlal on Friday (3/4/2026).
Bambang said that the attitude of tolerance has been taught in his family. In fact, there are family members who are non-Muslim.
“Because in my family there are also those who are Christian, so we just respect each other,” he added.
The same sentiment was felt by Nata, a congregant participating in the Good Friday worship series at Jakarta Cathedral Church. The resident of Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, said the worship atmosphere was solemn and conducive.
“Actually, the atmosphere here is very peaceful, very calm,” said Nata.
He admitted to being pleased with today’s Good Friday worship. According to him, Muslims and Catholics can carry out their respective worships.
“How to describe it, I’m also very happy because on Friday we can still worship peacefully, and the Friday prayers are also running smoothly. So, the tolerance around this road is quite good,” Nata explained.
