France has successfully tested the latest generation MICA NG air-to-air missile from the Rafale fighter jet during supersonic flight. This missile was developed to counter modern aerial threats, ranging from drones and highly agile cruise missiles to low-observable targets that are difficult to detect.

The testing, which took place over the Mediterranean Sea, has garnered significant international attention. According to the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA), as reported by Aviation Week and various defence media, the launch validates the entire deployment chain of the MICA NG infrared version within highly demanding operational environments.

Behind the technical terminology lies a significant achievement. France has successfully validated the performance of the MICA NG infrared seeker system during supersonic flight, an environment far more challenging than standard flight conditions. This is critical because when a Rafale flies faster than the speed of sound, both the aircraft and the missile experience increased temperatures due to air friction. This reduces the thermal contrast between a target and its surroundings, forcing the infrared seeker to work harder to distinguish a target from its background.

On 1 June, the DGA conducted the MICA NG firing test from a Rafale at a DGA missile testing range in the Mediterranean Sea. The test was supported by the missile manufacturer MBDA, Dassault Aviation, and the French Air and Space Force. While this was the second development firing of the MICA NG from the Rafale, it marked the first time the missile was released in a supersonic flight configuration, providing a more realistic assessment of its performance in extreme operational conditions.

The results were successful, validating the MICA NG infrared seeker—a system that allows the missile to detect a target’s heat signature and automatically correct its trajectory towards the target. This capability ensures the missile remains functional under highly demanding conditions. According to MBDA, the MICA NG is designed to enhance capabilities against targets with very low infrared and electromagnetic signatures. Beyond conventional fighter jets, the missile is developed to counter drones, agile cruise missiles, and various low-observable targets, including stealth aircraft. As such threats become more prevalent in modern warfare, the DGA noted that this test represents a major milestone towards the full integration of the MICA NG into the French Air and Navy Rafale fleets.
