French far-right group forms first caucus in history
Paris (ANTARA) - The National Rally (RN) will form a political caucus in the French Senate for the first time in the history of the right-wing party, according to the provisional results of the Senate elections held on Sunday (28/9).
“This is a historic victory and an important milestone,” said RN leader Marine Le Pen, who is also the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election, via her X account.
RN will form a caucus alongside the Union des droites pour la Republique (UDR), a small party led by Eric Ciotti, an RN ally.
Ciotti told the media on Sunday evening that the caucus will consist of approximately 15 senators.
In the French Senate, every caucus must have at least 10 senators. In this election, 178 out of a total of 348 Senate seats were contested.
Right-wing groups remain dominant in the upper house, and according to French media, Senate President Gerard Larcher is expected to be re-elected on Thursday (1/10).
