French Company's Ship Attacked in Strait of Hormuz, Crew Members Injured
A ship owned by a French company became the target of an attack in the Strait of Hormuz. The attack, whose source is still unknown, caused damage to the ship and injured several crew members. The incident, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (6/5/2026), was announced by the French shipping company CMA CGM, which stated that one of its ships was targeted in the strategic waterway route, affected by the war raging between the United States (US) and Israel against Iran. The French company reported that the attack occurred on Tuesday (5/5) local time. "The CMA CGM San Antonio was targeted in an attack yesterday while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in injuries to several crew members and damage to the ship," stated the CMA CGM shipping company on Wednesday (6/5). The French company added that the injured crew members have been evacuated for medical treatment. The Malta-flagged ship was attacked one day after US President Donald Trump launched what is called "Project Freedom", a US military operation to escort ships leaving the Strait of Hormuz. In the latest announcement on Tuesday (5/5), Trump said he is temporarily halting Project Freedom in an effort to reach an agreement with Iran to end the war. Tehran refuses to relinquish control over the Strait of Hormuz, using it as a bargaining tool in the conflict initiated by the joint US-Israel attack on Iran at the end of February. Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for global oil and gas supplies, has been severely disrupted since the war began. Iran has effectively restricted crossing activities in this vital waterway, shaking the global energy market and increasing concerns about prolonged economic damage. Before the war, the Strait of Hormuz was typically traversed by about one-fifth of the world's oil supply.
