Freeport states underground mine production rate reaches 50 percent post-landslide
Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) states that the production rate at the mine following the landslide incident in the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) underground mining area on 8 September 2025 has reached around 40–50 percent.
Based on an official statement received in Malang, East Java, on Wednesday, Freeport Indonesia targets operations to return to near 100 percent by the end of 2026 and achieve full production capacity in the early quarter of 2027.
PTFI President Director Tony Wenas emphasised that PTFI continues to strengthen safety aspects in the recovery of underground mining operations, as well as adding security personnel in the Grasberg area to ensure safe and sustainable production.
Throughout 2025, PTFI contributed approximately Rp70 trillion to the state in the form of taxes, royalties, dividends, and other revenues.
PTFI also remains committed to providing direct benefits to communities around its operational areas through various social investment programmes.
In 2025, Tony continued, PTFI’s social investment value reached nearly Rp2 trillion and will continue to increase by around 100 million US dollars or equivalent to Rp1.5 trillion per year until the completion of mining operations.
This commitment runs parallel to the company’s contribution in creating jobs, with more than 30,000 employees, of which around 40 percent are indigenous Papuans.
“Going forward, we are optimistic that this contribution can continue to increase, in line with the still relatively high mineral commodity prices. In addition, we consistently implement strict safety and operational standards as part of our commitment to responsible mining practices,” said Tony.
Freeport Indonesia commemorated its 59th anniversary with full reflection and respect, remembering nine employees who perished in incidents that occurred over the past year.
As part of the commemoration activities, PTFI management paid respects to seven employees who died due to a wet material slide incident in the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) underground mining area on 8 September 2025, as well as two employees who died due to two shooting incidents in February and March 2026.
“We hope that in the future there will be no more similar incidents, whether landslides or shootings, or other events that could endanger safety,” said Tony.
