Freeport Indonesia Seeks Early IUPK Extension to Secure Long-Term Investment
PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has submitted an application for the extension of its Special Mining Business Permit (IUPK) to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), despite the current permit not expiring until 2041. President Director Tony Wenas stated that the application, filed in mid-June 2026, is currently under review by the ministry. “Yes, it’s a process. As usual, it must be reviewed first, checking the completeness of the documents and so on,” Tony said.
Tony explained that the early application is intended to provide investment certainty for the next phase of underground mine development, a process he noted takes more than 15 years. He stressed that securing the extension now is vital to prevent a depletion of production as the 2041 deadline approaches. “So that there is no depletion nearing 2041, it is better to have it sooner rather than later,” he emphasised.
The application follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) and the Indonesian government in February 2026. According to FCX’s first-half 2026 performance report, the MoU outlines the extension of operational rights for the Grasberg mineral district beyond 2041. Under the agreement, FCX will maintain its 48.76% stake in PTFI until 2041, after which its ownership will adjust to approximately 37% starting in 2042. The company stated that the extension would allow for continued large-scale operations and provide growth options through the development of additional resources within the highly prospective Grasberg minerals district.
