A Freeport Indonesia employee was reported killed after being shot by an unknown assailant in the Grasberg open-pit mining area, Central Papua, on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

“PT Freeport Indonesia confirms that a shooting by an unknown assailant occurred on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, at approximately 8:30 a.m. WIT in the Grasberg open-pit mining area,” said Katri Krisnati, Vice President of Corporate Communications for PT Freeport Indonesia, in a written statement.

The victim was identified as Simson Mulia, aged 48. The company expressed deep condolences over the loss.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and offer support to the bereaved family,” Krisnati stated.

Freeport said it continues to coordinate with security authorities regarding the incident. “The safety and security of all employees and all parties in our operational areas remain our paramount priority,” she added.
