A PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) employee named Simson Mulia, 48, was killed by gunshot in Tembagapura, Mimika, Central Papua. The perpetrator remains unknown.

“PT Freeport Indonesia confirms that a shooting by an unknown individual has occurred, resulting in the death of Simson Mulia,” said PTFI’s Vice President of Corporate Communications, Katri Krisnati, to detikcom on Wednesday (11/3/2026).

The shooting took place in the Grasberg open-pit mining area in Tembagapura, Mimika, on Wednesday (11/3) at approximately 08.30 WIT. Katri expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.

“The entire PTFI family mourns deeply over the loss of one colleague in this incident. We express our heartfelt condolences and provide support to the bereaved family,” she said.

Katri has not yet provided further details about the shooting. She stated that coordination with government security authorities regarding this matter is ongoing.
