Freedom to Create: Towards World-Class Intellectual Property

Throughout January to July 2026, Indonesia recorded positive growth in its intellectual property ecosystem. Data from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) shows that the number of IP applications reached 231,264, an increase of 17.89% compared to the same period in 2025. The strengthening of IP protection continues, ranging from increasing awareness in the regions, protecting brands of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and geographical indications, to supporting royalty governance and the music industry. According to Otto, intellectual property development cannot be carried out by a single ministry alone because it involves almost all development sectors. Hermansyah explained that the policy is an affirmative step by the government to accelerate the development of a Song and/or Music Data Centre. Indonesia presented its intellectual property system reforms and proposed strengthening digital royalty governance through the Indonesian Proposal at the 68th WIPO General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. The obligation to take down content, infringement detection systems, and the threat of administrative sanctions can create operational uncertainty for digital platforms. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas met with WIPO Director General Daren Tang in Geneva to discuss strengthening the intellectual property ecosystem. Director of Copyright and Industrial Design, Agung Damarsasongko, added that institutional strengthening is key to ensuring the royalty system runs transparently and accountably. DJKI has introduced SIVIKI, an official video-based virtual consultation service to help the public understand the process and protection of Intellectual Property. The Commercial Court at the Central Jakarta District Court officially cancelled the registration of the ‘Tekipo’ brand, which was deemed to have similarities with the ‘Tekiro’ brand. DJKI also appreciated the role of teachers and lecturers in increasing the recording of copyrights and patents in educational institutions throughout 2022–2025.
