Free Schools for All: Jakarta's Strategy to Break Down Barriers Between State and Private Schools

JAKARTA - The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) has expanded its free school programme to private institutions. The policy aims to broaden educational access while reducing the perception that state schools are superior to private ones. ‘The programme aims to expand educational access for residents,’ said Nahdiana, Jakarta’s Education Department head, in a text message on Tuesday (26 May 2026). State schools have traditionally been the preferred choice due to lower costs. This has led to intense competition for state school places each academic year, with many students unable to secure spots. The free school programme allows students to attend private schools without financial burden. ‘It also ensures every child in Jakarta receives inclusive, fair, and quality education,’ Nahdiana added. Funding will be used to improve school facilities, enhance teaching quality, and support educators’ capabilities. This is expected to eliminate the perception of private schools as a second-choice option in Jakarta’s education system. ‘This initiative is part of the Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to expand educational access. Private schools play a significant role in meeting Jakarta’s education needs, especially in areas where state school access is limited,’ she said. Schools must hold official permits, a National School Identity Number (NPSN), accreditation, and have received BOS funding for the past three years. The programme prioritises private schools in areas without existing state schools.
