Free Nutritious Meals Trialled with Buffet-Style Service
BATANG — Lunchtime was a slightly different experience for pupils at SMPN 2 Kandeman in Batang regency, Central Java. On Thursday (8 October 2026), they did not receive meals in pre-portioned containers; instead, they served themselves from dishes laid out on a buffet as part of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme.
For pupils, this serving method gives them the chance to choose side dishes and decide what they will eat. Behind this simple experience, the government is trialling an MBG serving model intended to keep food warm and fresh while teaching pupils to take portions according to their needs.
The buffet-style service is part of a trial by the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), conducted through its Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG). In addition to maintaining food quality, the model is expected to offer pupils an educational experience in choosing food and taking sensible portions.
