Free Nutritious Meal Programme Revitalises Cake MSMEs in Makassar
The Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme has successfully revitalised cake-based Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, which had been struggling since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rismawati, a homemaker and owner of a dry cake business, stated that she has been greatly assisted by this national nutrition enhancement programme. During Ramadan 2026, she participated in producing dry foods to support the needs of the Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG), also known as MBG kitchens.
In an official statement in Jakarta on Monday, Rismawati noted that she produces various dry foods, including banana sponge cake, milk pudding, and natural-ingredient traditional snacks, to ensure a steady supply for beneficiaries during the fasting period. The MBG programme has allowed Risma $ ext{wati}$ to rebuild hope, not only for her family but also for the thousands of children who consume her products daily.
Beyond menu variety, her focus remains on nutritional quality, prioritising food safety over mere taste. “This is for school children, so I believe it must be the best,” said Rismawati, who maintains strict standards for her ingredients.
Initially joining as a volunteer and snack provider, she described the experience as a major turning point in her life. To ensure health standards, she avoids using soda in her dough—a common ingredient used to make cakes rise—and instead uses milk to achieve a softer, healthier, and safer texture for children.
Aware that her food is consumed by students of various ages and even pregnant women, she actively consults with nutritionists to ensure every menu meets health standards. For Rismawati, the greatest reward is not the large orders, but the positive feedback from the children. She expressed her hope that the programme continues to expand, particularly in supporting small MSMEs, serving as a bridge between local kitchens and the improved welfare of the community.
