The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Transportation, has prepared a free homecoming programme for Eid 2026 travel. The programme is organised by the Directorate General of Land Transport, providing hundreds of bus fleets for citizens wishing to return to their hometowns without cost.

In total, 401 buses have been allocated to serve mudik and return journeys. The fleet is estimated to transport up to 15,834 passengers travelling to various destinations during this year’s Eid travel period.

The government is opening registration for citizens starting in early March 2026. The registration process is conducted online through the official Ministry of Transportation website and will close once all available quotas are filled.

This free mudik programme covers dozens of destination cities across several provinces in Indonesia. In addition to facilitating homecoming travel, the government also provides additional facilities including motorcycle transport services for selected programme participants.

“Registration will open from 1 March 2026 online through the website nusantara.kemenhub.go.id. Registration will close when all quotas have been filled,” said Aan Suhanan, Director General of Land Transport, in a statement on Wednesday (25 February 2026).

The free road transport mudik programme this year serves 34 destination cities across 10 provinces, including Palembang, Lampung, Bengkulu, Padang, Medan, Aceh, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Cirebon, Kuningan, Semarang, Solo, Yogyakarta, Wonogiri, Purwokerto, Tegal, Pekalongan, Demak, Boyolali, Klaten, Pati, Blora, Cilacap, Wonosobo, Kebumen, Magelang, Wonosari, Jepara, Sragen, Madiun, Surabaya, Tuban, Malang and Tulungagung.

For return journeys, services will depart from 12 cities across 8 provinces, including Kuningan, Madiun, Surabaya, Palembang, Padang, Medan, Aceh, Semarang, Solo, Yogyakarta, Wonogiri and Purwokerto.

“In addition, we are also providing 8 motorcycle transport trucks for travellers returning to their hometowns by motorcycle. These trucks can accommodate 240 motorcycles,” said Aan.

Cities on outbound and return routes with motorcycle transport services include Solo, Yogyakarta, Wonogiri and Purwokerto.

He further explained that outbound departure times are spread across three days from five locations: 16 March 2026 from Pondok Cabe Terminal in South Tangerang, 17 March 2026 from Jatijajar Terminal in Depok and Pulogebang Terminal in Jakarta. Departures on 18 March 2026 will be from Kampung Rambutan Terminal in Jakarta and Poris Plawad Terminal in Tangerang.

“For return buses, departures will occur on 25 March 2026 from Bulupitu Terminal Purwokerto, Mangkang Terminal Semarang, Giwangan Terminal Yogyakarta, Tirtonandi Terminal Solo, Giri Adipura Terminal Wonogiri, Kertawangunan Terminal Kuningan, Purboyo Terminal Madiun, Bungurasih Terminal Surabaya, Alang-Alang Lebar Terminal Palembang, Anak Air Terminal Padang, Amplas Terminal Medan, and Batoh Terminal Aceh,” he said.

For motorcycle delivery on outbound routes, handover will take place on 16 March 2026 at Pondok Cabe Terminal in South Tangerang and will depart on the evening of 16 March 2026 from the same location.

“We also ensure that the free mudik buses to be dispatched have undergone safety inspections or vehicle checks. This is carried out to ensure and guarantee that the buses and drivers are in optimal condition so that all passengers are expected to arrive at their hometowns safely and comfortably,” he added.

The provision of this free mudik programme is a form of government support to help citizens, especially those needing to strengthen family ties in their hometowns. It is hoped that citizens will make full use of this programme.

“We appreciate private sector parties who are also organising free mudik programmes. Given the numerous free mudik programmes being offered, we urge citizens to register with one of the free mudik programmes to avoid duplicate registrations across various programmes and so that quotas can be utilised by other travellers who genuinely need them,” he concluded.
