Europe’s crypto asset industry has been rocked by a major crisis. Polish cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto has officially collapsed, leaving behind a scandal of alleged massive fraud. The unilateral suspension of operations since April 2026 has left funds belonging to thousands of customers stuck and impossible to withdraw.

Polish prosecutors are now moving swiftly to investigate the alleged criminal fraud. According to a Reuters report, total investor losses are estimated to have swelled to more than 350 million zloty, equivalent to US$96 million (around Rp 1.7 trillion).

A recent investigation by The New York Times has unravelled the tangled web within Zondacrypto’s leadership. Founder Sylwester Suszek reportedly disappeared mysteriously in March 2022 after attending a meeting in Czeladź, Poland. His family received messages claiming kidnapping with a Bitcoin ransom demand, though his fate remains unconfirmed.

Leadership then passed to Przemysław Kral, who oversaw the rebranding from BitBay to Zondacrypto. However, when the crisis erupted, Kral fled. Local Polish media tracked Kral to Israel, while other reports suggest he departed for Dubai.

The pull-out by Zondacrypto began to be detected on 23 April when its official website suddenly went offline after reports of customer balance freezes. The impact was fatal: its native token, ZND, lost almost all of its value and trading on the platform ground to a complete halt.

In response to the escalating case, Estonia’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) officially revoked the operating licence of BB Trade Estonia, the entity managing Zondacrypto, on 29 June 2026.

Before fleeing, Kral had denied insolvency rumours. He claimed the company still controlled more than 4,500 BTC in cold storage, but that the keys were held by the missing Suszek. However, this claim is considered a mere pretext because Zondacrypto never published an independently audited Proof of Reserves. On-chain research by Recoveris found that the Bitcoin balance in Zondacrypto’s hot wallet had plummeted by 99.7%, from 55.7 BTC in August 2024 to just 0.18 BTC by March 2026.

The Zondacrypto crisis has become a major focus in the Polish parliament and is expected to accelerate the tightening of European crypto market regulation under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, particularly regarding audits of asset reserve transparency and cross-border exchange supervision.
