Fraud through SMS
Fraud through SMS
From Media Indonesia
A few days ago I received a short message (SMS) on my mobile
phone telling me that I had won a cash prize of Rp 10 million.
The prize, the message said, was from PT Exelkomindo in
cooperation with PT Bank Danamon Indonesia. I was told to contact
the cell phone numbers 0817-9167-057 or 0817-9167-058.
After I dialed these numbers from my home phone I was told
that I had to use my cellular phone. Out of curiosity, I
complied. The result was that I was told to tell them the number
of my savings or giro account at Bank Danamon Indonesia right
away. I said I did not remember the account number and could not
get it as I was on the road. They then asked me what the number
of my Danamon ATM card was. I told them I did not have the card
with me.
Failing to get the information they wanted out of me, they
swore at me and hung up.
I realized that I had saved myself from an attempted fraud. PT
Bank Danamon Indonesia and PT XL should notify the public whether
or not this cooperation exists. Otherwise, some people may fall
victim to this fraud.
The public should be wary of fraud attempts promising
lucrative prizes.
