Fraud aimed at officials

With reference to our letter No. 356/022/PUMDA of Jan. 4, 2001 regarding fraud attempts using the names of government officials, we would like to let the public know that recently there have been attempts at fraud using the name of the Director General of Regional Autonomy (Dr. Ir. Sudarsono H., MA) at the Ministry of Home Affairs, as well as other officials from this ministry.

To prevent any loss, we would like the public to take note of the following modus operandi that is employed:

1. Governors/regents/mayors and regional officials from the provincial to the sub-district levels are contacted and asked for a sum of money on the grounds that this money will be required for some kind of assistance or donation.

2. The caller will ask that the money be transferred to an account in a particular bank.

In view of the above, we would like to remind the public that they should not respond to such requests made on whatever grounds.
