Istanbul (ANTARA) - French President Emmanuel Macron has affirmed plans for cooperation with other countries in a peacekeeping operation to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz amid Middle East tensions.

“We want to reopen the Strait of Hormuz,” Macron told students at Yonsei University during his visit to South Korea on Friday (3/4).

He stated that France is working with several countries to plan a peacekeeping mission to escort tanker and cargo ships through the strategic waterway.

Macron added that the operation would depend on the implementation of de-confliction mechanisms with Iran after a ceasefire is achieved or the situation becomes more stable.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20 percent of global oil supplies pass, has been disrupted since the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran, triggering a surge in global energy prices.

US President Donald Trump has issued varied statements regarding the United States’ plans for the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

However, he has called on other countries, including France, to help protect the important maritime route.
