FPI Urges Prabowo to Publicly Express Condolences Over Khamenei's Death

Front The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) has asked President Prabowo Subianto to publicly offer condolences for the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, who died in what the group described as an air strike by the United States and Israel. According to the FPI, condolences sent only by letter are not sufficient.

According to Hanif Alatas, Secretary of the FPI’s Shura Council, the request is an instruction from former FPI leader Rizieq Shihab. ‘We ask the President not only to dispatch the Foreign Minister to convey condolences, but that the President express condolences openly,’ Hanif said after breaking fast with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday night, 5 March 2026.

Hanif argued that the President should speak openly because Iran is a friendly country. Indonesia should consistently offer its strongest support to Iran in defending their sovereignty against the US-Israel attack.

According to Hanif, the FPI’s suggestion was conveyed to Prabowo by letter, since they did not have the opportunity to speak with the President at the breaking of fast or during discussions at the Presidential Palace.

Prabowo had initially invited Rizieq to come to the Palace and join the event, but Rizieq was unable to attend and was represented by Hanif Alatas, who is also his son-in-law.

Earlier, President Prabowo had expressed condolences on the death of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, who died following an air strike by the United States and Israel. Prabowo stated his condolences in a letter addressed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Prabowo entrusted the letter to Foreign Minister Sugiono, who then handed Prabowo’s condolence message to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi.

Sugiono met Boroujerdi at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. ‘I also delivered a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing deep condolences on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader,’ Sugiono said on the Instagram account @menluri.
