Fourth Theft of Streetlight Components in East Jakarta Within a Week
Theft of public street lighting (PJU) components endangers road users and the general public. Within the past week, at least four thefts of PJU lamp components have occurred in East Jakarta (Jaktim).
The most recent case took place in Cakung subdistrict, specifically along the Ujung Menteng Flood Canal (KBT) route towards Harapan Indah and the water gate. The East Jakarta Road Infrastructure Sub-Department (Sudin Bina Marga Jaktim) reported that lamps and cables had been stolen.
“Several PJU lamp units along with their NYY cables were reported missing due to the actions of irresponsible individuals,” stated the department’s Instagram account @binamargajakartatimur on Thursday (7/5/2026).
Bina Marga expressed regret over the vandalism of public facilities (fasum), which has left several road sections dark and highly dangerous for drivers. They urged residents who frequently pass through the KBT Ujung Menteng-Harapan Indah area to exercise extra caution.
Bina Marga is currently handling PJU repairs. They also called on the public to protect public facilities for mutual comfort and safety, and to report any suspicious activities related to city infrastructure damage to the authorities.
Three Other Theft Cases
On Wednesday (6/5), Bina Marga Jaktim also addressed non-functional PJU lights due to theft on Jalan MT Haryono, Cawang, Jatinegara. The road in that location has now been illuminated again.
“This installation had to be carried out because the previous cables had been stolen by irresponsible individuals,” Bina Marga stated.
Then, on Tuesday (5/5), Bina Marga handled the outage of 30 PJU lamps on Jalan Laksamana Malahayati and Jalan Panca Warga, Cipinang Muara ward, Jatinegara subdistrict, due to the theft of electrical components. Bina Marga repaired the lighting at the site.
“The loss of components from the PJU panel box at Substation K 131 due to theft,” they said.
A few days earlier, there was a theft of PJU power cables leading to the PLN kWh meter on Jalan Jendral Ahmad Yani, Rawamangun ward, Pulogadung subdistrict. This came shortly after the PJU network in that location had just been repaired.
“Previously, on 22 April 2026, repairs and resealing had been carried out, but today the PLN kWh meter has been damaged again. As a result of this incident, PJU lamps along Jl. Ahmad Yani Raya and Jl. Rawamangun Muka are out,” Bina Marga stated on Tuesday (28/4).
