Four TNI BAIS Soldiers Face Sentencing in Andrie Yunus Acid Attack Case Today
Four members of the Headquarters Detachment of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) will undergo the sentencing hearing for the criminal case involving the acid attack on Andrie Yunus, the Deputy External Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), on Wednesday. The hearing is being held at the Military Court II-08 Jakarta.
The four defendants in this case are Sergeant Second Class Edi Sudarko, First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetyo, and First Lieutenant Sami Lakka.
The sentencing hearing was originally scheduled for 20 May 2026, but was delayed as the Military Auditor presented two experts, including a doctor from the Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital (RSCM) Jakarta who treated Andrie. The defence also requested additional time to present a criminal law expert on 2 June 2026.
The defendants are charged with assault rather than attempted premeditated murder, specifically violating Article 469 paragraph 1, subsidiary to Article 4ng8 paragraph 1, and Article 467 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code (Law Number 1 of 2023).
During the legal process, Andrie, as the victim, has not been examined personally because he remains under intensive care at RSCM Jakarta. While the Military Court judges expressed a desire to hear testimony from Andrie, his capacity is limited to that of an additional witness as he is not currently in the case files. This move was strongly opposed by Andrie and his legal counsel from the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD), who expressed distrust in the military court’s ability to try TNI personnel for general criminal offences, citing concerns over impunity.
According to RSCM, Andrie’s activities remain restricted. He is currently under the supervision of a multidisciplinary medical team, including specialists in reconstructive plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and psychiatry, to ensure optimal recovery. Medical professionals have noted that Andrie is still in a post-operative recovery phase and requires regular evaluation of his wounds and ocular condition.
