Four Suspects Used Two Motorcycles Before Fleeing After Splashing Caustic Acid on Human Rights Activist
Police have unveiled details of four suspected assailants who used two motorcycles to spray caustic acid on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS (Indonesian Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence), with the perpetrators dispersing in different directions following the attack.
“Four suspected perpetrators allegedly used two motorcycles whilst waiting for the victim in front of KFC Cikini, then followed the victim as they moved towards Diponegoro Street and subsequently towards Salemba 1 Street,” said Kombes Iman Imanuddin, head of the Criminal Investigation Directorate of Metro Jaya Regional Police, during a press conference at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Monday (16 March 2026).
The caustic acid attack occurred on Salemba 1 Street, specifically at the intersection with Talang Street in Central Jakarta, on Thursday (12 March) at 20:37 Western Indonesian Time. Police also obtained CCTV footage to investigate the case.
“We are grateful to have obtained CCTV recordings with sufficiently clear images, which has greatly assisted our investigation and prosecution process,” he stated.
From police investigations, following the incident, the suspected perpetrators using two motorcycles fled in different directions. Each motorcycle carried two perpetrators.
He explained that one motorcycle, ridden by suspects 1 and 2, fled by driving against traffic on Salemba Street towards Pasar Senen. The perpetrators then proceeded to Kramat Raya Street, Tugu Tani monument, towards Stasiun Gondang before heading towards South Jakarta.
“The second motorcycle, ridden by suspects 3 and 4, did not change direction from the incident location but continued straight towards Pramuka Sari 2 Street, subsequently heading towards Matraman, then monitored via CCTV heading towards Jatinegara, and subsequently to Otto Iskandar Dinata Street in East Jakarta,” he said.
Imanuddin explained that the CCTV footage was then combined with digital processing of communications data. It was revealed that one perpetrator changed clothes before continuing their escape.
“Network communication analysis indicates the perpetrators subsequently dispersed to the areas of Kalibata, Ragunan, and the Bogor region,” he added.
