Four Still Trapped After Grand Polonia Medan Explosion, Two Evacuated

Police say six people are believed to be trapped inside a luxury house at the site of the explosion at the Grand Polonia housing estate in Medan, North Sumatra. Two of them have already been evacuated.

“At the moment, the data we have is that there were six people living inside. Of those six, one man was successfully evacuated, and a toddler is currently being treated at a hospital,” said Medan Metropolitan Police Chief Kombes Jean Calvijn Simanjuntak, as quoted by detikSumut on Monday (20/7/2026).

Meanwhile, the four others are believed to still be inside the house. Police, together with a number of other parties, are still working to evacuate the victims.

“From the data we have, among the survivors is the father of the homeowner, who has been evacuated. Still inside are the homeowner’s wife, and then there are two or three domestic helpers. The information says three domestic helpers, but we want to confirm this, though that is the information we have received,” Calvijn continued.

So far, Calvijn said, his team has not received reports of any victims other than those inside the house numbered 3B.

It is understood that the explosion occurred at around 3.30pm Western Indonesia Time. Police are still investigating the blast, but the initial suspicion is that it was caused by a leak in a buried gas pipeline.
