Four Shop Employees in North Sumatra Poisoned by Generator Fumes During Power Outage, Two Dead

Two employees died and two others remain hospitalised after four shop workers in Tebing Tinggi, North Sumatra, were poisoned by generator fumes during a power outage. The deceased have been identified as Adila and Rahma, whilst Dwi and Riana are receiving treatment at hospital, according to Air Putih Police Chief AKP Rahmat R. Hutagaol.

All four victims were residents of Tebing Tinggi and were at work in the shop when the incident occurred. The emergency was discovered when the shop owner attempted to contact the employees but received no response. The owner then instructed shop supervisor Edo to check on the workers at the premises.

“The shop supervisor, assisted by residents, forced open the door and found the victims already collapsed inside the room,” Hutagaol stated.

When discovered, all four employees were unconscious. Investigators determined that the victims had been in communication with friends the previous evening but were found collapsed in the room the following morning. The incident underscores the dangers of operating generators in poorly ventilated spaces during power disruptions.
