Four People Killed in Bantargebang Waste Landslide; Pramono: Unforeseen Due to Prolonged Rainfall
Four people were reported dead after being buried by a collapsing waste heap at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) in Bekasi City on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung extended his condolences regarding the tragic incident. According to him, the collapse of the waste heap at TPST Bantargebang was caused by heavy rainfall with high intensity over a prolonged period.
“The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government expresses profound condolences over the deaths of four people in the collapse of the waste mountain in Zone 4 of TPST Bantargebang that occurred last Sunday, specifically at 14:30, due to heavy rain and prolonged duration,” he said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday, 9 March 2026.
He suspected that the incident was caused by extreme rainfall that occurred over the weekend. In addition to causing fatalities, the incident also resulted in the operational road and river in the area being blocked by landslide material along a 40-metre stretch.
“Because this is certainly something that was not planned, not anticipated, resulting from heavy and prolonged rain, and the pile which was already very high caused sliding or a landslide, resulting in four fatalities,” he said.
