Four mayoralties win Adipura awards

JAKARTA (JP): Four of the city's five mayoralties have won
Adipura environmental awards for their success in improving
sanitation.

The awards were presented by President Soeharto yesterday to
the mayors of South, East, Central and West Jakarta at the
Indonesia in Miniature Park (Taman Mini Indonesia Indah) in East
Jakarta.

The awards were warmly welcomed by Governor Surjadi Soedirdja,
who urged Jakartans to continue their participation in improving
sanitation in their areas.

The governor said the goal of making the city clean could not
be realized without the participation of Jakarta's residents.

"Although four mayoralties have won the trophy we still have
to continue and publicize the sanitation program," Surjadi said
at a ceremony celebrating the awards at City Hall.

He said that the promotion of cleanliness could be said to be
successful when it reached a stage at which people were ashamed
to litter.

It was important, he said, for the city to continue to
aggressively promote greater cleanliness.

For Central Jakarta the award was the fourth Adipura award the
mayoralty has won, while for West, East and South Jakarta the
award was their first.

The North Jakarta mayoralty received only a certificate of
appreciation, also presented by Soeharto.

"I am sure that North Jakarta will win the award next year,"
Surjadi said, adding that the problems faced by that mayoralty
were more complicated than those faced by the others, especially
given that it was located near the sea which, he said, was
frequently dirty.

Following the welcoming ceremony at City Hall, the awards were
taken to the respective mayoralties by pick-up trucks to enable
the public to view them with ease.

South Jakarta Mayor Pardjoko said there were three key factors
in the mayoralty's success: management, equipment and the
participation of the people.

"There would not be any award if we had to depend on
management or equipment alone," Pardjoko said.

He said that the people's participation in making the city
clean had also been important. (yns)
