The flow of the Bekasi River in Bekasi City, West Java, has turned black again due to pollution. The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has sealed four laundry service businesses in Bogor Regency, West Java.

“KLH has sealed four laundry service companies (all part of textile industry activities in the Bogor Regency area) that have the potential for water pollution,” said the Head of the Bekasi City Environmental Agency (DLH), Kiswatiningsih, on Thursday (20/8/2026).

The four laundry businesses were sealed by KLH on Tuesday (18/8). The alleged pollution occurred in the upstream area of the Bekasi River.

From today until Friday (21/8), KLH will conduct deeper supervision of the four laundry service companies. It is possible that other parties will also be subject to action in connection with the pollution of this water flow.

“Today the KLH PPKL team, accompanied by the Bekasi City DLH PPLH and the Katak Team, went down to conduct another survey. A re-investigation is being carried out today,” she said.

Kiswatiningsih said that the handling of the Bekasi River pollution is being carried out by the central government through KLH and the regional government through DLH.

“Currently, the handling of the Bekasi River pollution is being carried out by KLH involving the Bogor Regency DLH, Bekasi City DLH, and West Java Provincial DLH,” she said.

She said that the KLH Supervisory Team carried out data and information collection (puldasi) on Wednesday to Saturday (12-15/8). The team also took wastewater samples upstream and downstream of the Cileungsi River as well as at the outfalls of the four companies.

Previously, a video of the Bekasi River water being black like used oil went viral on social media. The Bekasi City Government took water samples to ascertain the condition of the water quality.

Through its official website on Wednesday (5/8), the Bekasi City Government reported that the results of field monitoring showed the physical condition of the water at the monitoring point next to the Richmond Cluster, Kota Wisata, Ciangsana Village, Gunung Putri District, Bogor Regency, was black and emitted a pungent odour. This condition indicated a decline in water quality that required further handling.

The Head of the Bekasi City DLH, Kiswatiningsih, said that the test results from the UPTD Laboratory of the Bekasi City DLH showed that a number of surface water quality parameters had exceeded environmental quality standards. These parameters included Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), dissolved nickel, dissolved zinc, dissolved copper, and faecal coliform.
