Four killed in bus accident

SURABAYA, East Java: Four persons died and eight others were hurt after a bus plunged into a ravine at the Kaibon village in Madiun on Monday afternoon.

The chief of the claim section of the Jasa Raharja insurance company in Surabaya, Mubariq Ahmad, said the victims are being treated at the Sutomo hospital in Madiun and also at other public health facilities.

All the passengers of the Cendana bus had been insured, but the company had yet to check into the identities of some of the victims because they were not carrying any IDs, he said.

The bus driver apparently was trying to avoid hitting another bus coming in the opposite direction when he steered the vehicle into disaster, the Antara news agency reported. The bus was en route from Madiun to Ponorogo. (par)
