Four Indonesian films screened at Shanghai International Film Festival

Four Indonesian films—‘Jumbo’, ‘Yuni’, ‘Garuda di Dadaku’, and ‘Rencana Besar untuk Mati dengan Tenang (My Own Last Supper)’—were screened at the prestigious 28th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) 2026 in China from 20 to 23 June 2026. Among them, ‘My Own Last Supper’ (MOLS), directed by Ismail Basbeth, secured a nomination in the Main Competition Golden Goblet Award. ‘Indonesian cinema is experiencing remarkable growth, with works increasingly recognised internationally,’ said Bambang Wibawarta, Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture, during a communal viewing of MOLS organised by the Indonesian Consulate General in Shanghai at CMG Cinema Shanghai on Friday (19/6). MOLS held its global audience screening in Shanghai on 16 June 2026. Meanwhile, ‘Garuda di Dadaku’, directed by Ronny Gani, was selected as a nominee for the Golden Goblet Award in the animation category. Indonesian director and producer Kamila Andini served as a jury member for the Golden Goblet’s Asian New Talent category. The screenings, held in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Matta Cinema, and Ruang Basbeth Bercerita, were attended by 188 viewers including government officials, diplomatic corps from friendly nations, international journalists, academics, film industry players, and Indonesian citizens and diaspora in Shanghai. Prior to the screening, the audience also participated in a talk session with the producer, director, and lead actors. ‘MOLS’s presence at SIFF 2026 proves that a strong and authentic local Indonesian story can attract and be accepted by a global audience,’ Bambang Wibawarta added. On 21 June 2026, an ‘Indonesia Film Talk’ was also held at the SIFF Market, featuring the director and producer of MOLS to promote the development of the Indonesian film industry. Beyond strengthening the nation’s image, the presence of national films in China is seen as opening up opportunities for international collaboration, expanding market access for Indonesian filmmakers, and enhancing the global competitiveness of the national film industry.
