Four Focus Areas for Accelerated Development in Southwest Papua
The Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Papua’s Development has outlined four key focus areas for the development of Southwest Papua. The focus areas include regulatory strengthening, investment, natural resource management, and politics and governance.
Speaking during a meeting with local government and stakeholders in Southwest Papua on Saturday, Committee Chair Velix Vernando Wanggai stated that the province possesses a crucial geo-economic and geostrategic position, supported by natural resource potential and community cohesion. “Southwest Papua has resources, strong figures, community cohesion, and a very important geo-economic and geostrategic position. That is why this province is one of the choices for integrated development,” he said.
He explained that the first cluster focuses on regulatory strengthening by aligning various policies to better suit the characteristics and needs of Papua. The second cluster emphasises the development of investment and creative funding, including a plan to establish a Southwest Papua investment forum to connect regional potential with national and international investors, as well as promoting carbon trading. “It is not just about development, but about bringing in investment that can create jobs and drive the community’s economy,” Wanggai noted.
The third cluster concerns natural resource management, covering the mining, fisheries, forestry, marine, and land sectors, aiming to provide greater benefits for the Papuan people through the harmonisation of central and regional authority. The fourth cluster covers politics, law, security, and governance, including bureaucratic strengthening, conflict resolution, and the implementation of the Papua Development Acceleration Master Plan.
Beyond these four clusters, Wanggai added that human resource development through education, as well as the development of connectivity and economic corridors, remain priority programmes. All input from the local government and stakeholders will be compiled as advocacy material for further discussion with relevant ministries.
Southwest Papua is Indonesia’s 38th province, established from the expansion of West Papua under Law No. 29 of 2022, with Sorong City serving as its capital and economic centre. Despite its name, the region—which includes Sorong City, Sorong Regency, South Sorong, Raja Ampat, Tambrauw, and Maybrat—is geographically located at the northwestern tip of Papua Island (the Bird’s Head region). As the main logistics and transportation gateway in western Papua, the province holds significant strategic economic potential, with leading sectors focused on world-class marine tourism through the Raja Ampat Islands, oil and gas reserves, fisheries, and forest and marine conservation areas.
