Four Fire Hotspots Detected at Jatibarang Landfill, Semarang City Tightens Monitoring
The Environmental Agency (DLH) of Semarang City is tightening fire prevention efforts at the Jatibarang Final Processing Site (TPA). Over the past month, a joint team has detected and extinguished four fire hotspots at the location.
Head of Semarang City DLH, Glory Nasarani, said personnel have been stationed to monitor the potential emergence of fire hotspots at the Jatibarang TPA. “We do not want to take even the slightest risk. Field teams conduct routine patrols every 4 to 6 hours across all vulnerable zones, accompanied by periodic watering by the Semarang City Fire Department every two days, as well as an on-call system with a response time of under 15 minutes,” she said in a statement on Saturday (15/8/2026).
She revealed that Semarang City DLH has prepared eight water injection pipe points into the waste piles to address potential subsurface fires. In addition, officers carry out methane gas flaring daily, spray biodecomposer, gradually apply soil cover to active and passive zones, and monitor the area using drones.
For initial handling, Glory said a water reserve of approximately 230 cubic metres has been prepared. TPA tanker trucks, portable pumps, water hoses, and light fire extinguishers (APAR) are in ready-to-use condition.
According to Glory, the early response readiness has been tested by four fire hotspot incidents that emerged after the Jatibarang TPA fire disaster preparedness roll call on 9 July 2026. The hotspots were detected both inside and around the TPA area and were successfully handled by a joint team consisting of TPA officers, firefighters, sub-district officials, police, military, and residents.
“Four fire hotspot incidents were successfully handled quickly thanks to collaboration between TPA officers, firefighters, sub-district officials, the military, police, and local residents. Logistical support for water as well as tanker fleets and APAR on site are also ready to carry out initial handling,” said Glory.
