Four die, two missing in landslides

Landslides hit four villages in Sendana subdistrict, Majene regency, South Sulawesi, on Monday, leaving at least four people dead, one seriously injured and two others missing.

The landslides also buried 10 houses, destroyed two bridges and swept through two sections of the street in Sepong village.

Majene Regent Muhammad Darwis said the landslides followed two days of heavy rain since Saturday. He said all the victims were passengers of a bus traveling from Sidrap regency to Mamuju regency via Majene, where it was making a stopover.

Darwis said local residents from the four villages were evacuated to safer areas, while tap water and electricity supplies to Sendana subdistrict were cut. -- JP
