Four die in deadly RP landslide

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (DPA): At least four workers were
killed and an undetermined number of others were trapped after a
landslide buried a mining site in the southern Philippines, the
military said yesterday.

Colonel Adelberto Yap, deputy chief of the Armed Forces'
Southern Command, said heavy rains since Friday triggered the
landslide at Mount Diwalwal in the town of Monkayo, Davao
province, 945 kilometers south of Manila.

The downpour prevented rescue workers and villagers from
digging through the mud and boulders during the weekend. Military
teams were deployed to the disaster area to assist in the
operation.

"Soldiers have been clearing an area in the mountain where
tunnels were dug by the miners," Yap said. "We are doing
everything to save lives."
