Four Defendants in Andrie Yunus Case Sentenced to 2.5 Years Imprisonment; TAUD: Far From Justice
The Advocacy for Democracy (TAUD) has highlighted the sentencing demands for four TNI soldiers convicted in the acid attack case against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. TAUD considers the demand for 2.5 years of imprisonment for the defendants to be far from achieving justice.
“This demand is still far from a sense of justice for the victim, and the scent of impunity is strong. Unfortunately, this stigma continues to cling to the military justice jurisdiction when adjudicating its own members involved in serious crimes against civilians,” TAUD stated in a written release on Wednesday (3/5/2026).
TAUD also pointed out the absence of additional demands for the defendants’ dismissal from military service. The group believes this raises questions regarding the TNI’s commitment to disciplining soldiers who commit violations.
“The lack of a demand for dismissal reinforces the suspicion that TNI’s institutional protection of its soldiers is still at work in this case. This situation further strengthens the suspicion that the acid attack against Andrie Yunus was not a personal act,” said TAUD.
TAUD maintains that military justice reform is necessary and hopes for a revision of the laws governing military courts. “The light demands for the defendants further demonstrate the urgency for military justice reform by immediately revising Law 31/1997 concerning Military Justice,” TAUD added.
Furthermore, TAUD expressed regret over the military prosecutor’s request to destroy the evidence in the Andrie Yunus case, arguing that such a move hinders the enforcement of the law. “The absence of material evidence, which was previously held by the Metro Jaya Regional Police but handed over to the TNI Military Police and subsequently submitted by the military prosecutor in the Jakarta Military Court, will hinder the investigation ordered by the pre-trial judge,” TAUD noted.
Previously, the military prosecutor demanded that the four TNI soldiers convicted of the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus be sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. The prosecutor believes the four defendants are proven guilty of carrying out the acid attack against Andrie Yunus.
The sentencing hearing was held at Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Wednesday (3/6). The four defendants in this case are Defendant I Sergeant Two Edi Sudarko, Defendant II Lieutenant One Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Defendant III Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetyo, and Defendant IV Lieutenant One Sami Lakka.
The prosecutor believes the defendants are proven guilty of violating Article 467, Paragraph (1) in conjunction with Paragraph (2) of Law Number 1 of 2023 regarding the Criminal Code, in conjunction with Article 20, letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023.
