Four days off for workers

JAKARTA (JP): Companies are being urged to give workers at least four days off to celebrate the Idul Fitri holidays in their hometowns, the head of the East Jakarta office of the All- Indonesia Workers Union Federation, Syarifudin Pondungge, said over the weekend.

Syarifudin added that companies should be well prepared to give bonuses and holidays to their workers to celebrate the Idul Fitri festivities.

Since the two things are the cause of most workers' grievances during the year, companies are being advised to announce when they will give the bonus and to organize shifts to allow workers to get holidays without causing production stoppages, he said.

"Most of the workers live out of Jakarta. Therefore they need at least one day before and after Idul Fitri to travel," Syarifudin told The Jakarta Post.

This year, Idul Fitri falls on Feb. 20 and 21.

According to syarifudin, many big companies already have their own systems to handle the situation.

As this year's Idul Fitri starts on a Tuesday, it is advisable that companies give the workers time off from the previous Sunday, he said. (03)
