Four meteorological stations in China have been recognised as World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Centennial Observing Stations, bringing the country’s total to 22, according to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). The four observatories are located in Guiyang in Guizhou Province, Tanggu in Tianjin Municipality, Tengchong in Yunnan Province, and Yueyang in Hunan Province. The four stations have conducted continuous observations for more than a century, with observation records in Tanggu and Yueyang dating back to 1909, while Tengchong began in 1911 and Guiyang in 1920. Over the past century, these stations have collected long-term, stable, and scientifically valuable meteorological data, supporting the improvement of weather forecasting services, regional climate pattern research, and extreme weather event monitoring, a CMA official said. Launched in 2016, the WMO’s centennial observing station recognition mechanism is designed to protect long-standing observation stations and promote the establishment of consistent and accurate climate records.
