Forty-two injured as train derails

BANDUNG, West Java: A passenger train derailed in Padalarang, some 160 km east of Jakarta on Wednesday night, killing one and injuring 42.

The passenger train, carrying two coaches, ran between Bandung, the capital province of West Java, and Cianjur city, according to a railway officer, Djoko Martojo.

It overturned around 8:35 p.m. local time, about four kilometers west of the railway station in Padalarang, hitting a house. Apet Alimin, the resident of the house, was killed instantly. His wife, Enok, was seriously injured and has lapsed into a coma at the Hasan Sadikin Hospital.

A total of 26 passengers were still being treated at two local hospitals, Djoko said.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident. (17/oby)
