Former VP Try Sutrisno meets sultan

YOGYAKARTA: Former vice president Try Sutrisno met Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X at the latter's residence on Sunday, and agreed to call on the public to maintain peace during the elections.

"We all hope the elections will be held peacefully," Try, who is also the founder of the Indonesian Unity and Justice Party (PKPI), told reporters after the meeting.

He said he discussed general issues with the sultan, and avoided discussing the presidential election.

Hamengkubuwono had pulled out of the Golkar Party convention to select the party's presidential candidate.

Several national figures and presidential aspirants, including former president Abdurrahman Wahid, former Indonesian Military chief Gen. (ret) Wiranto and fellow Golkar presidential hopeful Surya Paloh, had earlier met Hamengkubuwono. --JP
