Former Utility Excavation Suspected as Cause of Road Collapse on Dewi Sartika in East Jakarta

The Infrastructure Implementation Unit (Satpel) for Road Construction in Kramat Jati Subdistrict revealed that the road collapse in the Dewi Sartika area, East Jakarta, is suspected to be caused by remnants of a utility excavation. “Regarding the cause, from what I see, it was only discovered after digging that underneath there was a remnant of a utility excavation. We don’t know whose utility it is,” said the Head of Satpel Bina Marga Kramat Jati, Dudy, when contacted by Kompas.com by telephone on Tuesday (14/4/2026). Dudy explained that the road damage reached 50 percent because the underside of the asphalt was holed and cavernous. He added that his team would carry out temporary repairs first using a compaction method to make the road safe for passage. “We’ll add aggregate, compact it, then re-layer with cold mix asphalt. Cold mix is temporary in nature, not permanent, because I believe the utility owner must take responsibility,” Dudy explained. The road repairs were carried out by six personnel with an estimated completion time of about one hour. Previously, the road collapse on Jalan Dewi Sartika in East Jakarta went viral on social media because the hole was exactly on the left side of the curving road. A video uploaded by the Instagram account @ijoeel showed a fairly deep hole and was deemed dangerous for motorists, especially those coming from Kalibata towards Jalan Dewi Sartika. Based on Kompas.com’s observation at the location on Tuesday (14/4/2026) morning, the road condition was still collapsed. Several motorcyclists were even seen nearly falling in while passing through. Additionally, several traffic cones were placed around the location as markers. This condition is considered dangerous because the collapse point is at a curve, making it a blind spot for drivers from Kalibata towards Dewi Sartika.
