Former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Resign from British Parliament

London (ANTARA) - Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday (1/9) that he will resign as a Member of Parliament (MP) after representing the Holborn and St Pancras constituency in London for 11 years.

In a statement to the local newspaper Camden New Journal, Starmer stated that serving as the representative for the constituency for 11 years had been an “extraordinary honour and privilege.” However, he will now shift his focus towards “international affairs.”

Starmer remarked that he felt this was the “right time” to leave the House of Commons. His decision will trigger a by-election in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency, London.

On 20 July, Starmer officially resigned as the British Prime Minister and was succeeded by Andy Burnham.

“My work is done,” Starmer said in his final speech as Prime Minister outside 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British PM.

The resignation follows increased turmoil within the ruling party, poor election results, and a prolonged decline in public support.
