REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON— Former UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has warned that US President Donald Trump’s intervention in the war against Iran could turn into an unforgivable strategic mistake.

Meanwhile, two writers on the Axios website highlighted a series of contradictory statements from President Trump, ranging from military threats to assertions of achieving total victory.

Hague reminded—in an article in The Times newspaper—that in recent days there have been drone attacks from thousands of kilometres away, the first against a Russian port and the second against Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, causing significant damage at both locations.

In both conflicts, according to the author, Trump assumes that the weaker party in the conflict has no choice but to accept a humiliating defeat.

Yet Ukraine does not need to endure that if it receives sufficient support, and the Iranian regime has no intention of surrendering. As a result, this is a shocking-scale strategic mistake from the White House.

The former minister explained that Trump has made a major strategic mistake by engaging in war with Iran merely to demonstrate strength, while Russia exploits the oil price turmoil, and China grows stronger in strategic and economic fields.
