Former UGM Student Body Chairman Finds Tracking Device on Vehicle Following Gejayan Protest
Former Chairman of the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Student Executive Body (BEM), Tiyo Ardianto, discovered a tracking device on the chassis of the vehicle he was travelling in. The incident came to light shortly after he participated in a demonstration in Gejayan, Yogyakarta, on Saturday (13/6).
On Saturday evening during a journey, a notification suddenly appeared on his mobile phone. Tiyo shared this information in a post on his personal Instagram account, @tiyoardianto_. He stated that he had only realised the significance of the notification after leaving the Gejayan area.
The tracking device, reportedly named PBX Finder, was found by Tiyo beneath the vehicle’s frame. Tiyo said he did not know who had fitted the device, but described the incident as a disgusting act reflecting the nature of the current ruling regime. He lamented that his sincere criticism aimed at improving the nation had been met with threats and danger.
This is not the first time Tiyo has reported intimidation. In February, he claimed to have received a series of threats after he and members of the UGM BEM sent a letter to UNICEF regarding the suicide of a child in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
The demonstration involved hundreds of people under the banner of the ‘People’s Alliance Calling’, who gathered at the Gejayan intersection in Sleman regency carrying 10 demands. The crowd, dressed in black and comprising students, academics, activists, labourers, and online motorcycle taxi drivers, occupied the intersection and used a pickup truck as a stage for speeches. Protesters called on President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming to review all government programmes considered problematic by the public. Traffic around the Gejayan intersection was closed completely and diverted by police.
