Former Governor of South Sumatra, Alex Noerdin, passed away at Siloam Semanggi Hospital on Wednesday, February 25th, at 1:30 PM.

The family spokesperson, Okta Alfarisi, confirmed that Alex passed away after receiving treatment at the hospital.

“The body is currently being transported back to Palembang. The family home is located on Jalan Merdeka, Palembang,” said Okta, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday, February 25th.

The passing of the two-term Governor of South Sumatra, known as a transformative figure in development, has brought deep sorrow, especially to the people of Bumi Sriwijaya. During his tenure as Governor of South Sumatra from 2008-2018, Alex is credited with bringing significant changes to the city of Palembang and its surroundings.

Several strategic projects were realized during his leadership, including the development of the Jakabaring Sport City, which hosted the 2011 SEA Games and the 2018 Asian Games.

In the transportation sector, he also promoted the construction of the first LRT in Indonesia in Palembang, which has since become one of the city’s icons and a reliable means of public transportation.

In addition, social policies such as free healthcare and free education programs were once used as pilot projects at the national level in an effort to improve access to basic services for the community.

The family is currently preparing for the repatriation of the body to Palembang for burial. (Ant/P-4)
