Former Supreme Court Secretary Nurhadi Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison in Money Laundering Case

Former Supreme Court Secretary Nurhadi Abdurrachman was sentenced to five years in prison in a case involving allegations of gratuities and money laundering (TPPU). “Imposing a sentence on the defendant of five years’ imprisonment,” stated Chief Judge Fajar Aji Kusuma while reading the verdict at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday (1/4). Nurhadi was also ordered to pay a fine of Rp500 million or face 140 days’ subsidiary imprisonment, and restitution of Rp137.159.183.940 or three years’ subsidiary imprisonment. This ruling is lighter than the prosecutors’ demand of seven years’ imprisonment, a Rp500 million fine or 140 days’ subsidiary imprisonment, and the same restitution amount or three years’ imprisonment. Previously, Nurhadi was accused of receiving Rp137 billion in gratuities. Prosecutors stated that Nurhadi received these gratuities from parties involved in court cases at the first instance, appeal, cassation, and review levels. The gratuities were received by Nurhadi from July 2013 to 2019, during his tenure as Supreme Court Secretary. In addition, Nurhadi was accused of laundering Rp307 billion and US$50,000. The funds were allegedly placed by Nurhadi into several bank accounts and used to purchase land, buildings, and several vehicles. Prior to this, Nurhadi had served a six-year prison sentence and was fined Rp500 million or three months’ subsidiary imprisonment. Nurhadi was found to have been legally and convincingly proven guilty of corruption offences in the form of bribery and receiving gratuities related to cases within the Supreme Court environment. In the Supreme Court ruling, the KPK prosecutors’ demand for additional restitution of Rp83 billion was not granted by the panel of judges.
