Former South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin Dies
Alex Noerdin, Governor of South Sumatra from 2008 to 2018, has passed away. The news was confirmed by the family’s spokesperson, Okta Alfarisi.
“Innalilahi wainnailaihi rojiun, my father Alex Noerdin has passed away at 13:30 WIB at Siloam Hospital Jakarta,” said Okta.
“We are currently arranging for the return of his body to Palembang and arrangements are being made for his burial,” he added.
Alex Noerdin was born in Palembang on 9 September 1950. He rose to prominence as Regent of Musi Banyuasin from 2001 to 2007.
He became well-known during his tenure as Governor of South Sumatra from 2008 to 2018. He also contested the 2012 election for Governor of Jakarta but was unsuccessful.
Following his governorship, Alex served as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the Golkar faction for the period 2019-2024. He held the position of Chair of Commission VII of the House of Representatives.
