Former police chief sues Mega

JAKARTA: Former city police chief Comr. Gen. (ret.) Sofjan Jacoeb and 21 other former police officers filed a lawsuit against current National Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar and President Megawati Soekarnoputri on Monday.

They filed the suit at the Jakarta State Administrative Court over a regulation which forced them to retire earlier than they wanted, their lawyer, M. Rudjito said as quoted by detik.com.

Sofjan, now an instructor at the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas), two other high-ranking police officers and 19 middle- ranking officers, were told to retire at the age of 55. They protested the decision, issued by Da'i in May, as Law No. 2/2002 on police stipulates that the retirement age is 58 years old, and can be extended to 60 years old.

Da'i had argued that the law could not take effect for technical reasons.--JP
